Shri Birender Singh is Union Minister of Steel since July, 2016. Prior to this, he was Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water & Sanitation since November, 2014.
Shri Birender Singh has given a new direction and vision to the Indian Steel Sector after assuming charge as the Minister. Draft National Steel Policy‐2017 has been put in public domain outlining the roadmap for the Steel Sector.Under his leadership, India’s export of steel has doubled and the country has become a net exporter of steel after a gap of three years. Unabated growth in imports of steel has been curbed resulting in imports coming down by 38% in 2016‐17 compared to last fiscal. He has been spearheading the nationwide drive to enhance steel consumption in India using innovative and out‐of‐box thinking.GFR Guidelines‐2017 have incorporated Life Cycle Cost analysis, which is likely to result in higher steel consumption. MSTC Metal Mandi was launched in October 2016, as a niche platform for trading of steel and other metals.Two regional conferences have been organized in Eastern & Northern India with the aim of popularizing use of steel among the decision‐makers and end‐users. Inter‐Ministerial Task Forces and Committees have been constituted to examine the potential areas of steel usage for better results. Industry veterans and top professionals have acknowledged the vibrancy and dynamism that Shri Singh has imparted to the Steel Sector in India in a short span of 10 months.
Shri Birender Singh hails from district Jind in Haryana (India) and did his graduation from Government College, Rohtak, Haryana and LLB from Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
In his long political career spanning over 40 years, Shri Singh has been a Member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly during 1977‐82, 1982‐84, 1991‐96, 1996‐2000 and 2005‐2009.
Shri Birender Singh also remained Cabinet Minister, Government of Haryana during 1982‐84, 1991‐92 and from 2005‐2009. Shri Singh has also been Member of Lok Sabha from 1984‐1989.
Shri Singh was a Member of Rajya Sabha from August, 2010 to August, 2014 and was re‐elected as Member of Rajya Sabha in November, 2014.
